A day in the life of our work experience students

Our names are Freya, Macey, Ella and Charlotte. Over the last week, we have been working with twisted loop and Tomoro AI to develop AI art for use in establishing a brand identity. The two businesses were kind enough to provide us this opportunity and we have learnt a lot throughout our time with them. Thank you for giving us this brilliant opportunity.

Our initial steps were to research the twisted loop brand and their website so that we understood their aims and values as a brand. This would help us when we came to do any further research we may need. Before starting the work experience, we had little experience of working with chat GPT and DALL-E and so we would need training and research prior to the start of the project. Luckily, Tomoro and twisted loop were able to provide this for us.

Before we came into the office, we had several zoom meetings with some of the leaders from Tomoro. They helped us to become comfortable with the tasks we were going to undertake and the software that we were going to use. We were introduced to a Miro board which showed us what our potential journey may look like. We primarily used this to help during these remote briefs and on the first day in the Manchester office.

n the Manchester office, we became acquainted with the twisted loop clients and the software. In a series of interviews, we began to understand what the twisted loop brand identity was and what we needed to show through DALL-E. We summarised the brand in 3 words, these were: trusted, knowledgeable and no-nonsense. From here, we created our initial ideas and thought through the potential symbols that we wanted to show throughout the work. The most obvious being a propeller which is shown in the company's logo. The idea of it is to show how the company propels others into the future world of business driven by AI.

Other ideas we had were locks to show security, handshakes to show trustworthiness and clocks to show how fast they can work. Below are our first images:

As we kept doing this, we realised that it may be interesting to make our own GPT specifically for twisted loop as our images we were creating lacked consistency of any kind. Making the GPT changed the game as we could code exactly what we wanted to create and mould the coding to gain exactly what we and the client wanted. This process was called building a DALL-E seed parameter. We continued to edit this GPT and attempt to perfect it over the next few days.

The next day we arrived in London to deliver our first proposal to the leaders of twisted loop. First, we used the whiteboard in the room to show our initial research of the brand and what our initial ideas were. Then we created a canva presentation of all the images we had so far developed using our own GPT. These images were still very rough and lacked a specific style which was one of the main questions we wanted to ask them. So we kept the GPT very broad in multiple different styles and asked them which style was their favourite. The feedback they gave was that a fineliner style was their favourite and an intertwined torus shape. In response to this we put that into the configure of the GPT. Also we added their favourite pictures to the knowledge section for the GPT to use as a reference image.

As we were developing it we sent ChatGPT the images they liked and asked it to describe the images. Then we used elements of these prompts to create other images that our client would hopefully also like. Finally we did another review with the client to ask if they were happy and they were.

Below is a selection of some of our final images:

At the end of the experience we had learnt new skills and developed an understanding for the means of AI art and how it can be mixed with fine arts. Since we had made our own GPT customised for the twisted loop brand we had also learnt that AI image generation does work, however, up to a certain point. We found that there were often areas of the image that would need to be touched up in post-production and so we cannot fully rely on AI providing us fully ready images. Looks like humans are still needed after all.

Some of the skills we learnt are:

  • Leadership - through getting ourselves organised and allocating different pieces of work to each other and taking responsibility for our deliverables

  • Presentation - through standing up and delivering our thoughts and our work to a room of clients and people we did not know

  • Problem solving - through having to constantly change the prompt we provided if the images were not what we asked for or wanted and to find new ways to help the team

  • Communication - through interviews to understand the brand and how the company wants to present itself to the world then articulating that back to the client

Although not a skill, we also learnt what it was like to be involved in the world of work as we had to travel and journey around, meet new people and work what felt like a full time job. This experience has been beneficial to all of us as we now understand the mindset required going forward in our lives.

Even though it was very exhausting to travel around so much and work so hard, we really enjoyed ourselves and had a very exciting time and would definitely do it again. Our experience with Tomoro and twisted loop was really enjoyable and so worthwhile.  We would love to work with them again in the future.
